8th - Exploring Home and Career Skills!
Full year- Every other day class
This course consists of creative cooking, sewing, and an Entrepreneurship unit. In the foods room students will learn how to prepare nutritious foods in a lab setting. The course culminates with students putting their cooking skills into practice and opening their own businesses. The classes create food-based businesses for their entrepreneurship unit. Students were required to write business plans, request start up capital, make product samples, manufacture inventory, figure out budgets, cost of product, create market orders, and sell their products to students and staff. Profits are donated to local charities.
Students will also take part in a virtual internship. The program is called Xtreme Intern. It is a virtual internship for the students. They have a faux company called Global Planet Solutions that all the students work for in all areas of the world. They work independently using a Voki Mentor on the website. It starts by students taking a career test to see what area best suits their needs and what career cluster they fall under. XTREME INTERN is an educational and career assessment tool that is designed to assist students in recognizing their interests, natural talents and abilities, while applying them to virtual real-world career experiences.Those who complete the XTREME INTERN Challenge will walk away with new personal insights, along with a Career Strategy Playbook filled with valuable information for being high school, college, and career ready. Students will navigate the globe, gathering pertinent industry information within the corporate divisions of the company.
During the sewing unit, students will work on both hand and machine sewn project. They will also take part in a community service sewing project.
